Find out more about the UK Bank Holiday, the official Diamond Jubilee medal and the competition for city status

A number of Diamond Jubilee initiatives were announced by Government departments. Click on the relevant links below to find out more:

The Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday
The late May bank holiday was moved to Monday 4 June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday took place on Tuesday 5 June 2012. The extra bank holiday and extended bank holiday weekend also applied to Scotland. Find out more on the Directgov website

City status and Lord Mayoralty
As part of the celebrations, towns in the UK competed for city status and existing cities competed for Lord Mayoralty (or Lord Provostship in Scotland). These were granted by The Queen in her Jubilee year. The results were announced in the first half of 2012. Find out more

Official Diamond Jubilee medal
To mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, an official medal was awarded to those in the Armed Forces and emergency services, and to prison service personnel. Find out more
